Notes on the Candlelight Sea - The Fracture
The Fracture is the most important event in the history of the Candlelight Sea. It marks the end of Cheth’s status as guardian deity, and the beginning of the sea’s five thousand year curse.
As is written in the holy texts, the goddess Cheline took note of her brother’s growing wickedness, and sought a way to contain him. Knowing that their strength was perfectly matched, the mother goddess channeled her power to create a mortal soul to assist her in the coming battle. From a wisp of golden cloud and a feather plucked from her crown, she gave the gift of life to her beloved daughter – the great prophetess herself, our most revered and divine Shoshana of the Rookery.
When her abilities had fully manifested, Shoshana banded together with her mother against the Bonefish and his accursed armies. The battle took thousands of lives and brought large swaths of the sea to absolute ruin – but when Cheth began to weaken, Cheline and Shoshana combined their power to deal the finishing blow.
The Fracture – as it was aptly named – ripped Cheth’s divine spirit from his physical form, shattering his bones and scattering them to the far corners of the sea. The resulting tidal wave flooded the world, taking even more souls down to the depths, before receding into a blessed stillness. While the Bonefish no longer posed a threat, the sea became tainted by the souls of thousands upon thousands of seaghosts, and remains cursed to this day.
The Fracture Day holiday is celebrated yearly at the end of October.
